Can someone think of a compelling reason I shouldn't buy this Audi A7?

I’m currently driving a 2016 WRX STi and my commute has increased such that in driving like 400 miles a week. My STi was lovely in the mountains of CA but now it’s just a pain in my butt on CT highways. Carmax is willing to give me $27,500 for the Subi and I think the Audi is going to be a much better every day commuter car. This one is loaded with all the features at $33k, and a 1000 100,000 mile warranty with a $300 deductible is only another 4k.

Hopefully that’s a typo on the warranty length...

Give it a test drive first and see how it goes?

You can probably get another 3-4k out of your Subie but the A7 is not a bad choice. You’re almost in ISF territory though...

Ok fine, I guess I’ll be the grownup here.

You could get a lot more for your STI selling it on your own.

Whether you do that or still do Carmax, if you’re going to be doing that much mileage, I’d get something where you’re less likely to be murdered on depreciation, and runs on regular fuel.

Sell Subi on your own — should go quick, but put a deadline of a week on it. In ad, point out that you have significant offer from Carmax to help keep out the lowballers (lol, you’ll never be able to do that). Slow play Carmax for that week so they don’t sell the Audi. And figure out what the warranty really is because something does not compute. Good luck and have fun!

I mean, it’s a nice car but...

1) that value for the WRX is a little low, cause CarMax

2) that price for the A7 is a little high, see above

3) gas mileage is similar. Yeah, the A7 will be more comfy, but not with it to me for the $10k effective difference (when you factor taxes, warranty, etc)

4) don’t forget about serious German depreciation, especially at 400 miles a week

5) Just...why the A7?

It I was in the same situation (and I am, sorta) I wouldn’t be looking at mid-high performance five year old German saloons.

I test drove it and it was like a dream. Not quite as much power as the Subi but Holy cow was it comfy, and it didn’t feel like my back would hurt after a day of driving.

Your STi is a unique color. It should go for a lot more than what CarMax offered you. I wouldn’t want that to be CarMax’s payday and not yours.

I have the WRX and its back breaking enough, I can’t imagine how rough the STi is especially with that long of a commute, so I empathize with your situation. But dat blue doe...vs brown Audi.

If you get the 100,000 mile warranty it’s a solid move. I’d personally pick something known for reliability if I was going to be driving that many miles a week, because even with the warranty you’re going to potentially be stuck with a dead car. It might not cost you much to fix - but it will keep you from driving your 400 miles that week.

Unless your back is pretty wrecked, I wouldn’t trade in a STI on an Audi. With the mileage you’re driving that Audi is going to be in the shop a lot and worth a quarter of what you’re Subie would be in a year. Also, CarMax gives crap value for trades and is generally more expensive. Subies are easy to sell. I’d just sell it private party and look for a CPO Audi.

Well, I get wanting something nice and comfy and relatively new. Anything like that is going to depreciate off a cliff driving 400 miles a week. But something like an Audi is going to fall off the cliff even faster.

The only reason not to by an A7 is you can’t afford it. As Faris Bueller would say “if you have the means I highly suggest picking one up”?

CarMax seems to have you in a position where you’re thinking you’ll get a car that works much better for your needs – and a very nice one at that – for not much more than they’ll give for your car. But that is ignoring the future. The STi is one of the slowest depreciating vehicles out there. An Audi is pretty much the opposite. Given high miles they’ll both depreciate more than usual, but the Audi at a much higher rate. So while you’re “only” paying $10k or so more today to trade up, over time you’re taking on much more expense.

I was in a similar position when I traded in my S2000 outright with no cash exchange for a Legacy GT…it felt like the right grown up decision for me at the time. But I’ve beat myself up for it ever since, and you might too. The novelty of the A7 will wear out, it will be just another car to you soon enough, and an expensive one to maintain/take depreciation on. Understood if you need to sell the STi, but do it private party and consider something else as your DD if you’re going to see that many miles. If you’re open to having 2 cars you can probably get something else more fun to play around with for ~$10-15k and put the rest towards a used Avalon or something like that.

To my earlier point, at 400 miles a week, regardless of mpg, premium fuel is going to be a killer. Depreciation will be killer no matter what but at least get something that runs on regular.

If you want a comfy cruiser and don’t care about fwd, something like a Hyundai Azera or Kia Cadenza would be a solid option. They’re both comfy, quiet, generally great places to spend a long amount of windshield time in, have decent power, and run on regular. Same deal on a V6 Accord, but this will start out higher up its depreciation curve and then fall off a cliff with your mileage.

If you want awd, the 2015-up Genesis sedan has awd available, or maybe go a little MURRICA with a Charger or 300. The Cadillac ATS, Buick Regal, Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ all come in 2.0T AWD versions that run on regular. The 2017-up Fusion has a 2.7T V6 option and the MKZ has a 3.0T V6 but you’ll take a mileage hit with these.

If you want a non-huge, non-slow crossover, the Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0T Ultimate is pretty nice. I had a base model Santa Fe as a rental and thought it was an awesome cruiser car.

I respect and appreciate those points, but from my point of view, the MPG of the Audi is better than my Subi and better than the Stinger GT I was looking at, so it feels like a win honestly. Thanks for the reccomendations

Sure, the A7 is better mileage than the STI. Here’s some mileage numbers for you, for point of reference.

Kinja'd!!!

400 miles a week is a hair over 20k miles so let’s just use that for a nice round number.

I don’t know where in CT you are but I looked up gas prices in Hartford and today the best credit card price is $2.69 for regular or $3.15 for premium.

For 20k miles you’d use 689 gallons in the A7, 714 in the Cadenza, or 606 in the Accord.

Which means that on a yearly basis you’d spend $2170 to fuel the A7, $1920 for the Cadenza, or $1630 for the Accord. That’s $540/year more to fuel the A7 vs. the Accord and the Accord V6 still ain’t slow.

You also have to figure that with the type of mileage you’re doing, ongoing maintenance and insurance costs are also going to be a lot higher on an Audi than a Kia or Honda.

If you can afford the A7 then great, but I dunno, 20k miles a year is a shit ton of miles.

If you want to go the RWD route, I would check for a decent Lexus GS. I love Audi, I have one as I like to talk about it here because Oppo, but if you are driving that many miles a Lexus would be a bit more reliable.
